How I Fulfilled my Dream of Racing Cars at 57
At any age. These three small words carry so much meaning. For us boomers, they can serve as a reminder to keep trying new things… to keep positive… and to keep after our dreams.
The Inspiration Behind the At Any Age Video Series
My dream was racing cars. For as long as I can remember, I loved speed. As a child, I used to ride my little blue bicycle like it was a racecar. The freedom I felt flying down hills and whipping around corners… Well, there was nothing like it!
But it was only at 57 years old that I finally had the opportunity to fulfill my dream. I started tracking with my dad that year — my dad who was 76 at the time! If anybody lived life to the fullest, it was him. And he inspired me to do the same.
So when opportunity knocked, and I had the chance to race in a league in Europe, I knew I had to do it. Despite facing many of the challenges that come with aging, like a hip replacement and osteoarthritis, I hopped on a plane and took my best shot behind the wheel of a Porsche GT3 cup race car.
I remember thinking that first racing season, “This is the best year of my life!” Now, I’m still at it two years later, and I think, “This is the best year of my life!”
I’ve also been thinking about how my experience contradicts the often negative view society has of aging. As 20-year-olds, we’re all but taught to dread turning 50. But in truth, there’s nothing to dread. Aging is as natural a part of life as breathing.
We earn our age. We’ve worked hard for it! And what better way to reward ourselves than by living our best life? These are the thoughts that led to the creation of a new video series…
Motivation to Go Get Life, At Any Age!
You could say At Any Age is a passion project. I wanted to celebrate and share a positive view of aging with the world. That’s why the videos in the At Any Age series feature inspirational older adults, who are taking on challenges and living life to the fullest.
I wanted to start with my own story, to help people understand why it matters so much to me. So the first episode of At Any Age follows me on the racetrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=WU0NzJfQLyg&feature=emb_logo)! The second episode (coming soon!) features an 86-year-old skydiver as she jumps out of a plane at 18,000 feet above sea level…
