The federal agency that oversees the Medicare Part D program provides several sources of information and help:

  • The “Medicare & You” handbook is sent to all Medicare beneficiaries every September and contains basic information on the Medicare program for the following year. It includes a list of Part D plans available in your area. You can also read this handbook (without a list of area plans) online. Or you can download a copy in other formats — for example, to your e-reader/tablet, in large print or in Braille.
  • Medicare’s toll-free help line at 800-633-4227 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (TDD users call 877-486-2048 toll free.) Customer representatives can answer questions in English and Spanish. For other languages, you can ask for an interpreter at no charge.
  • Medicare’s website provides general information and interactive tools to help you compare Part D plans, Medicare Advantage health plans, nursing homes and hospitals, or to find a doctor who accepts Medicare patients in your area.
