Why We’re Talking About Unretirement
In 2010, Chris Farrell tapped into the zeitgeist with his groundbreaking book, The New Frugality. Now he’s done it again with Unretirement: How Baby Boomers Are Changing The Way We Think About Work, Community, and the Good Life, which will be released on September 2.
Well ahead of its Labor Day release, the book has won praise from every major media outlet for its prescience and clarity about the changing paradigm of retirement’s ripple effects across American society. I hope this book is on must-read lists for CEOs, politicians, university presidents and anyone leading a forward-thinking organization.
Farrell doesn’t sugarcoat; he is realistic about would-be retirees’ economic strains. Yet he also sees the potential windfall of human talent represented by those who are ready, willing and able to pursue encore careers that tap their life’s worth of experience and know-how. He recounts several encore stories in the book, like Purpose Prize winners Wanjiru Kamau, who works with African immigrant youth in Washington, D.C., and Susan Burton, an ex-offender now helping formerly incarcerated women turn around their lives.
On the book’s jacket, my colleague Marci Alboher calls the book, “an indispensible companion for the millions of midlifers venturing into the uncharted waters of unretirement.” I wholeheartedly agree.
