99th Birthday Gift – Canoe Ride on The Milwaukee
“I think it’ll be a great adventure,” Franz said. “And I don’t want to give George Bush any credit, but if he can jump out of an airplane at 90 I know I can do something adventuresome, too.”
Franz is more familiar than most with the Milwaukee River.
He grew up at 18th and Clarke in Milwaukee and as a boy would play along the river’s shore.
As an adult, he worked from a Wells St. office overlooking the river.
These days Franz is a supporter of the Urban Ecology Center, headquartered just a long cast from the Milwaukee in Riverside Park. The center and its branches in Washington Park and in the Menomonee Valley run a host of outdoor and environmental programs, including on the Milwaukee River.
When Ken Leinbach, UEC executive director, learned of Franz’s birthday wish, he set about to make it happen.
