We all know how important it is to maintain a healthy diet as we age. Yet, no matter how vigilant we are, the sad truth is that our waistbands seem to grow tighter with each passing year. Part of the reason for this is that menopause causes weight to shift to our abdomen—morphing us from pears into apples. We can only do so much to combat this inevitable switch in fruit shape, but we can manage the foods we eat and the overall number of calories we ingest.

According to the National Institute of Senior Health, women over 50 should consume about:

• 1,600 calories a day if your physical activity level is low (you only perform activities associated with typical day-to-day life)
• 1,800 calories daily if you are moderately active (you walk the equivalent of 1.5 to 3 miles a day at 3 to 4 miles per hour)
• 2,000 to 2,200 calories daily if you have an active lifestyle (you walk the equivalent of more than 3 miles a day at 3 to 4 miles per hour)
